Prioritising Your Oral Health
A Fresh Smile
is a Healthy Smile
At Refresh Dental, we emphasise the importance of dental hygiene as the cornerstone of preventing cavities and periodontal disease. Maintaining good oral health starts with daily brushing and flossing, coupled with regular professional cleanings to ensure your smile stays fresh and healthy.
Dental issues such as periodontal disease and tooth decay are primarily caused by bacterial plaque—a colourless, sticky film that forms on your teeth, especially near the gum line. Plaque is constantly forming, but with thorough daily brushing and flossing, you can effectively remove these harmful germs and significantly reduce the risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss.

Our Hygiene Treatment Services
EMS technology
Our Twickenham dentists and hygienists are so passionate about prevention that we have invested in the very best hygiene cleaning technology on the market.
Our Swiss-made EMS machine allows us to carry out Guided Biofilm Therapy. This means we can clean up to 100% of the harmful plaque (biofilm) from your teeth and gums – painlessly!
Why is that so important? Because it is the only way to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
GBT treatment
Firstly, we use disclosing tablets to identify the biofilm on your teeth. As we have said, biofilm is tricky to spot, and it can only be removed completely once it is made visible. An organic dye is applied to your teeth to make the biofilm visible and highlight the areas that need the most attention.
By identifying the areas, you are missing with your usual brushing technique we will teach you how to protect your teeth from damaging biofilm for life.
We then remove the biofilm and hard plaque (calculus) from your teeth and gum pockets gently and thoroughly using a variety of special cleaning heads, warm water, air and a flavoured powder.
Periodontal treatment
Our skilled dental hygienists are dedicated to providing comprehensive periodontal treatments tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. Whether you are experiencing early signs of gum disease or require more advanced periodontal care, our team is here to ensure your gums stay healthy and strong.
Our periodontal treatment services include thorough assessments to evaluate gum health, professional cleanings such as scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar buildup, personalised treatment plans based on individual needs, and ongoing maintenance to monitor gum health and prevent reocurrence.
What are the considerations of traditional scale and polish treatment?
Cold water can make sensitive teeth even more sensitive
Patients can have a dislike or phobia of the needles used for local anaesthetic
Removing plaque using scraping and scalers may be painful
Treatment can be invasive and scratch dental and implant surfaces.
Questions and Answers
-
Can I book an appointment without seeing the dentist?
Yes, you can schedule an appointment without needing to see a dentist first. At both the Twickenham and Hampton branches, we offer a service known as a direct access appointment. This means you can book an appointment directly with a hygienist without the prerequisite of having a prior consultation or registration with a dentist. Direct access allows you to receive professional cleaning and hygiene care directly from the hygienist, which can be particularly convenient if you’re looking to address dental hygiene needs or simply maintain your oral health.
At what age should my child see a dental hygienist?
At Refresh Dental, we recommend that children begin seeing a dental hygienist around the age of 6. This is an ideal time to start establishing good oral hygiene practices and to begin regular cleanings. Early visits help monitor the development of your child’s teeth and gums, identify any potential issues, and ensure their oral health is maintained as they grow.
